Nile University Mass Comm Lecturers Make Waves with Transformative Research Publications

Research works of two distinguished lecturers from Nile University’s Mass Communication Department, Mr. Abdullateef Mohammed and Dr. Adeola Abdullateef Elega were recently published and indexed in major research databases.

Mohammed’s two research papers, “The Fall of a Dry Leaf is a Warning to the Green Ones: Exploring the Twitter Ban and the Impending Dangers of Data Politics, Algorithmic Governance, and Mass Surveillance in Nigeria” and “Exploring the Prevalence of Agenda Setting Theory in Africa-focused Research, 2000-2020,” were both published in the prestigious journal First Monday, and the high-impact Web of Science SCOPUS journal respectively.

His first publication “The Fall of a Dry Leaf is a Warning to the Green Ones: Exploring the Twitter Ban and the Impending Dangers of Data Politics, Algorithmic Governance, and Mass Surveillance in Nigeria,” investigated the 2021 Twitter ban in Nigeria and its broader implications for digital rights, data politics, and algorithmic governance.

According to the study, the Twitter ban might pave the way for repressive and authoritarian digital practices like mass monitoring and electoral manipulation. This essay has received substantial attention from communication experts and media professionals since it is considered current and critical to the ongoing discussion on digital rights and governance in Nigeria.

Mr. Abdullateef Mohammed, Asst. Lecturer, Mass Communication Dept., Nile University of Nigeria.

While his second publication Exploring the Prevalence of Agenda Setting Theory in Africa-focused Research, 2000-2020,” investigates the use of agenda-setting theory in African research, shedding more light on the theory’s fruitfulness over the past two decades, it is noteworthy because it is one of the few studies that employ a meta-analysis research design to systematically explore scholarly contributions on the subject of mass media agenda-setting in and beyond Africa.

In the same spirit, Dr. Adeola Abdullateef Elega’s two research papers were published in open-access and peer-reviewed journals of CogitatioPress and First Monday respectively and rated high-impact SCOPUS Q1 and Q2 publications.

Dr. Elega co-authored the paper “The Fall of a Dry Leaf is a Warning to the Green Ones: Exploring the Twitter Ban and the Impending Dangers of Data Politics, Algorithmic Governance, and Mass Surveillance in Nigeria,” which investigated the 2021 Twitter ban in Nigeria and its broader implications for digital rights, data politics, and algorithmic governance, and was rated as a SCOPUS Q2 journal.

Dr. Adeola Abdullateef Elega, Lecturer I, Mass Communication Dept., Nile University of Nigeria.

Elega further published a SCOPUS-rated Q1 journal titled “Google News Initiative’s Influence on Technological Media Innovation in Africa and the Middle East” together with Dr. Mathias-Felipe de-Lima-Santos of the University of Amsterdam and Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), Brazil; Dr. Allen of the University of Botswana, and Dr. Charis Papaevangelou of University of Toulouse, France.

The publications by Dr. Elega, Mr. Mohammed, and their colleagues address the impact and dangers of media innovation, the role of stakeholders such as political actors and data-rich incumbents and the people, as well as the moral responsibility required for platforms to carry out their primary duties, which are the democratization of voices, respect for citizens and plurality of ideas, and promotion of dissident activities.

These research publications contribute substantially to the global outlook and visibility of the Nile University of Nigeria and strongly align with the institution’s ongoing research agenda.
