Nile University of Nigeria recently launched Women in Tech Students Club with an inaugural networking event in March and formal activation during the University’s 14th Matriculation Ceremony.
The newly formed “women in Tech club,” was initiated by Mrs. Binta Gali Agbonika, the head of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub as well as a UX designer. According to Mrs. Agbonika, the club was inspired by the theme of the 2023 International Women’s Day, “DigitAll: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality,” and aims to offer a unique opportunity for female students at Nile University who are eager to learn more about the world of tech to come together, share their experiences in the field, and network with tech industry professionals in Nigeria.
The club’s inaugural networking event featured inspiring lectures from accomplished women in IT, including Fatimah Adelodun, Cyber Security Special Assistant to the DG of NITDA, Felista Aku, Senior Partnership Manager of AfriLabs, Dooshima Dapo-Oyewole, Relationship Manager on Digital Transformation, Skills & Trust of Afenoid Enterprise Ltd, and many others, who served to inspire and encourage the students to pursue careers in the sector.
The guest speakers talked about the opportunities available for women in tech space, the success stories of women in the workforce and their capacity to overcome the challenges which served as inspiration to students present at the networking event.
The Management of Nile University of Nigeria also gave the Women in Tech Club a boost and validated it by approving its activation as one of the 14 Student Clubs that were recently reactivated during the institution’s 14th matriculation ceremony.
By initiating the Women in Tech Club, Nile University further demonstrates its commitment to the promotion of gender equality and giving female students a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the development of a more diverse and inclusive tech industry, educating people about the challenges faced by women in the field, promoting equal opportunities in the tech sector and advocating to close the gender pay gap in the tech industry.
