Nile University’s Computer Engineering Students Gain Industry-Grade Exposure at Phase3 Telecoms Ltd.

Thursday, December 15, 2022— As part of efforts to drive sectoral engagements and expose students to hands-on field experiences, the Computer Engineering Department of Nile University of Nigeria headed by Prof. Sadiq Thomas, led a departmental delegation comprising 36 Students and two staff to the Phase3 Telecom Company headquarters in Abuja.

The Computer Engineering staff and students were received by the Project Manager of Phase3 Telecoms, Mr. Abdullateef Aliyu, who welcomed the Computer Engineering delegation and briefed them about the host company. After the briefing, a short quiz was presented to the students, and the student with the highest points was awarded a gift.

The staff and students also received a tour of the organization’s premises, including a physical illustration of a basic telecom distribution box, its operations, composition, and functionality of the fibre-optic cable that within the distribution cabinet. Subsequent tour of the facility’s network operation centre, server room, and powerhouse, further exposed the students to the system of monitoring clients’ networks, the tools of network conversion, operations of the facilities as well as the areas for uninterrupted internet supply to their clients.

The visiting Computer Engineering students from Nile University of Nigeria were then taken through a practical section on how to connect fibre cables together using a machine, through a rigorous procedure that prevents errors that could lead to data loss during transmission.

Phase 3 Telecom is a leading independent fibre optic infrastructure with Points-of-Presence (POPs), colocation, and NOCs in Nigeria. The company was issued a National Long Distance Operator (NLDO) license in 2003 by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
