IDUS 2022: Nile University of Nigeria Hailed as Prime Example of a Healthy Nigerian Campus

Nile University of Nigeria has been described as a true expression of a Healthy Nigerian Campus. The Institution received this validation when it played host to the 2nd edition of the International Day of University Sports (IDUS2022), to promote the annual celebration of sporting activities in universities worldwide.

The theme of IDUS 2022, which ran from September 18th to 20th was “A Healthy Nigerian Campus.” It featured an art exhibition, an e-sports tournament, and a sports conference. Volunteerism in Nigerian University campuses was one of the many topics discussed among other topics related to young people.

A cross section of activities at the FISU-NUGA-sponsored International Day of University Sports (IDUS2022), hosted by Nile University of Nigeria(NUN).

While declaring the three-day event open, the President of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), Mr. Emeka Ogbu, said the choice of Nile University of Nigeria was no coincidence because the institution is a prime example of a “Healthy Nigerian Campus”. He expressed his gratitude to the university management for committing to host all Nigerian Universities and NUGA for the 2022 International Day of University Sports (IDUS2022).

Speaking on the side of the event opening, were other officials from NUGA, including its former President Prof. Stephen Hamafyelto, the Chairman of the Technical Committee Prof. Musa Garba Yakassai, as well as the Chairman of the University of Calabar Sports Council & National president of Nigerian Association of Athletic Technical Officials Prof. Ogunjimi Lucas Olusegun, who also described the Nile University of Nigeria as an exceptional university in the country with an appealing and conducive environment that matches with its excellent performances in sports and academics. They added that NUGA will continue to collaborate with the institution because the achievements of the Nile University sports teams in previous NUGA-sponsored competition has proven that the institution is one to be identified with.

The Vice Chancellor of Nile University Prof. Dilli Dogo, who was represented by the Director of Business Development and Strategy of the Institution Mr. Gerald Osugo, in his address on the final day of the event, emphasized that the Nile University of Nigeria under the Honoris United Universities Network has always been supportive of sports as evidenced by the many full-ride sports scholarships it has awarded in the past to deserving student-athletes who continued to excel in and out of the classroom, driving home the Education for Impact goals of the Institution and making Nigeria proud.

The International Day of University Sport (IDUS) is a sporting event that takes place every year on September 20th. It was initiated by the United Nations Education, Science, and Culture Organization (UNESCO) and is run by the International Federation of University Sports (FISU) in collaboration with the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) in Nigeria. The goal of the event is to bring universities and their local communities together through sports, physical activity, and healthy living practices.
