Nile University has strengthened its position as one of Nigeria’s non-state actors championing the charge towards sustainable development through a series of recent climate-positive actions. While hosting the British High Commission’s Climate Change and Energy team on June 14th, the Vice-Chancellor of Nile University, Prof. Dilli Dogo, pledged the institution’s commitment to joining the United Nation’s Race to Zero campaign.
According to Prof. Dogo, “The future of the next generation is dependent on what we do today. As a member of Honoris United Universities, the first and largest pan-African private higher education network committed to educating future leaders to impact globally, Nile University believes that this future we seek is at risk if the ravaging effects of climate change are left uncurbed. We have already taken steps to tackle this issue through the installation of an 876kWp solar system to facilitate the supply of clean energy on campus. We are also happy to sign up for the Race to Zero campaign and collaborate with the Commission to increase our contributions to the fight against climate change” The Vice-Chancellor also stated Nile University’s plans to incorporate solar energy systems in its future buildings, further reinforcing the institution’s commitment to accelerating the attainment of net-zero emissions.

In a related effort aimed at promoting waste reduction on campus and environmental sustainability, Nile University has developed a biodigester to convert food waste into biogas, providing a more environmentally friendly fuel for cooking on campus. The biodigester system was a student-led project executed by Nile University’s Engineering students in collaboration with the Engineering students of the University of Mount Union, Ohio, USA.

Further advancing the University’s waste to wealth conversion efforts is the recently finalized plan to implement a recycling policy on campus. The policy was inspired by the University’s ongoing participation in the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Recycle for Education Drive 2022, which commenced on June 16th. To ensure the effectiveness of this policy, recycling bins will be procured and strategically placed across campus. Additionally, an awareness campaign for all University staff and students educating them on the importance of effective recycling will be conducted.
By fostering a culture of effective waste management within its community and increasing its adoption of renewable energy sources for power generation, Nile University is poised to be a crucial driver of sustainability for many years.
