Philosophy

The philosophy underlying the work of the department is to provide a flow of graduate students imbued with the systematic and analytical skills to make their contributions to the Nigerian, Turkish, African and world community, by equipping them with a broad foundation of knowledge in the field of politics, diplomacy and foreign policy relations.

As an instrument for citizenship education, Political Science provides broad education in government and politics which is the foundation of active citizenship in our communities from the local to the global level.

The Department believes in excellence, creativity, productivity and freedom of conscience for the advancement of the individual and humanity.
 

Objectives

The objectives of the program include the following:

  1. As one of the Social Sciences, the teaching of Political Science in the department is focused on making the students think critically and communicate effectively on ongoing matters related to politics.
  2. The syllabi are designed to equip students with modern skills, knowledge and methodology needed for day-to-day in-depth analysis of power and power relations among individuals, groups and nations.
  3. The lectures are designed to imbue in the students the professional capacity to apply academic learning to present day real world experiences.
  4. The key objective of the Ph.D. The program is to train and develop highly professionals, preparing and building up their independent intellectual capacity for sustainable and creative useful careers in teaching and research in higher institutions of learning, research and administration in research institutes, government, non-governmental/national and international organizations, and specialized consultancy services.

Entry Requirements

  1. University Matriculations of 5 credit passes including English and Mathematics at O-level; and
  2. Bachelor’s Degrees in relevant program with at least 2nd class lower; or
  3. Academic Master’s degree in relevant areas with minimum CGPA of 3.5 on a 5-point scale with a thesis score not lower than 60%(B); and
  4. Candidates must demonstrate adequate intellectual capacity, maturity and effective decision making and problem-solving potential.
  5. Candidates should be successful in the written and/or oral examination to be conducted by the department.

How will I be taught?

Teaching is carried out through a combination of interactive lectures supported by seminars, workshops, tutorials, case studies and informal one-to-one discussion. They encourage the development of clear analytical skills and create a forum where you can test your ideas against the arguments of your peers.

Career support

There are many careers where a political science degree is useful. Graduates can enter areas including commercial management, finance, administration and politics. Some of our PhD graduates also continue onto successful careers in academic research and teaching.

Fees and Finance

In 2019/20 the full-time tuition fee postgraduate students on this course will be N4,200,000 (this is the total fee for the programme).
