May 23, 2022— Nile University’s Mass Communication Department organized its first ever photojournalism exhibition. The event held for the department’s third year (300 Level) students was part of their graduation requirements. In the event’s welcome address, Dr. Adeola Elega (Senior Lecturer, Mass Communication Department) stated that photojournalism is simply the act of using photos to tell stories, adding that the photos taken by the students were excellent and thought-provoking.
The exhibition was graced by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Dilli Dogo, who congratulated Dr. Adeola and the exhibition team for the success of the event. He stated that photojournalism is one of the most difficult aspects of journalism and commended the organizers and students for their brilliant execution of the exhibition. Prof. Dogo further commented that the success of the event was proof that the students of the Mass Communication students have a bright future. He concluded by pledging the Management’s commitment to providing the Mass Communication Department and other departments in the University the necessary support to continue to produce world-class graduates.
In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, Prof. Gylych Jelilov, expressed his excitement about the success of the exhibition and congratulated the Mass Communication department for scoring 96.5% in the recently concluded National Universities Commission exercise for full accreditation, which was the highest score nationwide. According to Prof. Jelilov, Nile University is dedicated to maintaining this high standard of academic excellence. Prof. Osman Koroglu, the Head of the Mass Communication Department also congratulated the exhibition team and stated the department’s desire to make such events a tradition.
Describing her experience during the event, Ms. Azeezah, a 300 Level student of Mass Communication who was also an exhibitor at the event, stated “The exhibition was exciting, intriguing, insightful, enabling, fun and interesting. The various beats given to each student depicts the Nigerian society and all the photos presented here reflect the Nigerian stories. This project has given me invaluable firsthand experience of what the art of photojournalism is about.”
Another student exhibitor, Mr. Ibrahim, stated that the project was educative as it challenged him to go outside his comfort zone and reach out to unfamiliar people. The exhibition coordinator, Mr. Muhammad Ibrahim Yakasai, stated that organizing the event exposed him to many valuable experiences as he was required to successfully execute many varied tasks to ensure the success of the event.
