Nile University’s Engineering Student Designs Innovative Irrigation Control System, Wins Most Outstanding Female Engineering Student in Abuja

July 15, 2022— Hauwa Hidaya Hafiz, a 500 Level Electrical & Electronics Engineering student at Nile University, won the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria’s (APWEN) award for the most outstanding project by a female engineering student in Abuja FCT. In a competition held by APWEN, Abuja, among outstanding female engineering students from Nile University, University of Abuja, and Baze University to mark the 2022 World Youth Skills Day, Hauwa’s project on an automatic irrigation control system using a GSM module won the top prize.

Commenting on her achievement, Hauwa stated, “All praise to the Almighty, who let me witness this day. No words could express my excitement and gratitude for receiving this award. I am deeply honored for this recognition given to my work.” The chairman of APWEN Abuja, Engr. Charity Joseph-Ojobo, had high praise for Hauwa’s performance during the competition. She stated, “Her (Hauwa) project was outstanding and the panel of judges from Anambra, Lagos, and Gombe all scored and declared her the WINNER of the keenly contested competition.”

Hauwa’s automatic irrigation control system uses a solar power system with a backup battery, which eliminates the power demand from the main power grid and sends feedback/information via SMS (through the GSM module) to the farmer’s cell phone, making it an efficient and cost-effective way to irrigate and boost crop growth.
