Nile University Mass Communication Department held an event titled “Communication Issues and Social Media Engagement in the Face of the New Normal” on the 26th of May 2021. The guest speaker for the event was Barrister Abdur-Raheem Adebayo Shittu (Former Minister of Communication, Nigeria).

The event commenced with a speech by Barrister Adebayo; he started by giving insight into what communication is about, describing it as information sharing between two or more people with a summation that “communication is life”. He then mentioned that the importance of communication cannot be over-emphasized as it plays a cogent role in everyone’s day-to-day life such as politics, religion, and education. Furthermore, he said a lot of things have gone wrong due to miscommunication or lack of proper communication and he named the culprits as divided attention, assumption of knowledge of message before delivery, interruption, emotional dictation or response, failing to account for the cultural difference in communication, and message misinterpretation.

He then added that communication via social media has helped improve the quality of communication to a large audience and has helped create business strategy, online financial transactions, increased civil awareness, and disaster management.

In conclusion, he recommended that the use of social media for communication needs to be regulated and laws must be put in place to reduce or totally avoid the deliberate spread of fake and malicious information.

The event ended with a group photograph.
