All-conquering Nile Spartans Receive Grand Welcome

Following the outstanding performance of the Nile University basketball team, Nile Spartans, in the recently concluded Total National Division 1 League—where they emerged as champions and qualified for the Nigeria Basketball Premier League—the Management of Nile University held a series of activities for the team to commend their efforts.

On-Campus Reception

July 16, 2021— The Nile University Management organized a welcome back reception and award ceremony, which had the University’s top academic and administrative officials in attendance, for the Nile Spartans. Addressing the members of the basketball team during the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Osman Nuri Aras, lauded the team for helping the University to gain national acclaim through their performances over the course of the Division 1 League campaign. He also expressed his excitement about the influential role played by Nile University’s sports scholarship program in the successes achieved by the Nile Spartans. According to him, the fact that over 50% of the players are on full sports scholarships at Nile University shows that the scholarship program is a resounding success.

Prof. Aras concluded his speech by encouraging the members of the Nile Spartans to translate their impressive performances on the basketball court to their academics.  Following the Vice-Chancellor’s address, Prof. Moussa Mahamat Boukar (Dean, Faculty of Natural & Applied Sciences) recognized one of the key members of the team, David Connor Olumokoro, who, in addition to his immense contributions to the Nile Spartans’ achievements, is on course to graduate with a first-class degree in the Computer Science Department. To reward his academic accomplishments, Prof. Boukar made a special request to the University management for Connor to be retained at Nile University (specifically, the Computer Science Department), for his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program following his graduation.

The event ended with the provision of full sports scholarships to four members of the basketball team (facilitated by the institution’s Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Lateef Kareem), donation of cash prizes, and presentation of commendation certificates to the members of the Nile Spartans.

July 17, 2021— The Management of Nile University sponsored a short shoe shopping trip to the Adidas shop in Jabi Lake Mall (Wuse, Abuja) for fourteen members of the Nile Spartans. Each member of the basketball team purchased a pair of basketball shoes that was paid for by the Nile Management. The Nile officials that were present in this event were the University’s Chief Marketing Officer, Ms. Hannatu Ageni-Yusuf, and Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Lateef Kareem.
